Stephen Cashman, principal at Pennridge High School in Perkasie, was pulled over on Swamp Road at about midnight on Sunday, Feb. 5, Plumstead police said in a statement.

The officer claimed he smelled a "strong odor of an alcoholic beverage" and conducted field sobriety tests before placing the principal under arrest, they wrote.

Charges against Cashman, 50, of Doylestown, are pending the results of a blood test, police added.

Pennridge School District Superintendent David A. Bolton issued a letter to district families offering support for students but otherwise declined to comment.  His statement read:

I wanted everyone to know that we are aware of the recent situation regarding Dr. Cashman, our High School Principal. We have met with the staff so that they can provide support to our students as needed. Please reach out to your child’s guidance counselor or house principal if they need anything.

With this being both a legal and personnel matter, the district will have no additional statements at this time.
